Frequently asked questions about Blumio
Short answers about modes, permissions, screenshots, recordings, privacy, app exclusions, and support.
Product Basics
What is Blumio?
Blumio is a blue light filter for Mac. It is designed for people who spend long hours on a screen and want a more comfortable display without making every color look heavily orange.
Is Blumio always running in the menu bar?
Yes. Blumio lives in the macOS menu bar so you can switch modes, adjust intensity, or turn the filter off without opening a separate window.
What modes does Blumio include?
Blumio includes task-based modes for Work, Coding, Reading, Movie, Gaming, Sleep, and Custom. Each mode is meant for a different balance of comfort and color preservation.
Which Blumio mode should I start with?
Start with the mode that matches what you are doing most often. Work is a good starting point for general daytime use, Coding is useful for long editor sessions, Reading is better for text-heavy use, and Sleep is better for a warmer evening setup.
Can I use Blumio during the day?
Yes. Many users prefer a mild setting during the day and a warmer setting in the evening. The best daytime setup is usually one that feels comfortable without making your display look overly tinted.
Is Blumio only for nighttime use?
No. Blumio can be used both during the day and at night. Many people prefer lighter settings for daytime work and stronger settings later in the evening.
Can I use Blumio for gaming?
Yes. Gaming mode is intended for users who want only a lighter adjustment so visuals stay closer to normal while still reducing some of the harsher blue output.
Does Blumio launch automatically when I start my Mac?
Not by default. You can turn on Launch at Login inside Blumio if you want it to start automatically.
What happens when I quit Blumio?
When you quit Blumio, your display returns to its normal color state immediately. The app does not keep filtering after it is closed.
Comparisons and Workflow
How is Blumio different from Night Shift?
Night Shift is built into macOS and works well for basic scheduled warmth. Blumio is for users who want faster menu bar control, separate modes, keyboard shortcuts, app exclusions, and screenshots or recordings that keep their original colors.
Read the full Blumio vs Night Shift comparison.
Is Blumio better than Night Shift for developers?
Blumio can be a better fit for developers who want faster control from the menu bar, separate modes for different times of day, and the ability to keep syntax colors easy to distinguish during long coding sessions. If you only want a simple built-in evening warmth setting, Night Shift may be enough.
Can I exclude certain apps?
Yes. Blumio can automatically pause when specific apps are active. This is useful for design, photo, video, media, or presentation tools where accurate colors matter.
Learn how app exclusions help color-accurate Mac workflows.
Can I keep Blumio off for one app but on for everything else?
Yes. Add that app to your exclusions list. When the app becomes active, Blumio pauses automatically. When you switch away, Blumio resumes your selected mode.
How do I remove an app from exclusions?
Open Blumio from the menu bar, go to the exclusions area, and remove the app from the list. After that, Blumio will stay active in that app unless you turn it off manually.
Will Blumio affect color accuracy in Figma, Photoshop, or Final Cut?
Blumio changes what you see on the display, so if exact on-screen color matters in a specific app, it is best to add that app to your exclusions list. That way Blumio pauses automatically while you work in that app and resumes when you switch away.
Does Blumio support multiple displays?
Blumio is designed for Mac display workflows and applies filtering through display color output rather than an overlay window. If you have a multi-display setup, check your current display behavior after installing and contact support if anything looks off.
Does Blumio work with external monitors?
Blumio is designed for Mac display workflows and can be used in multi-display setups. Because display environments vary, it is a good idea to check your own monitor setup after installation and contact support if anything looks unexpected.
Capture, Permissions, and Privacy
Does Blumio affect screenshots?
No. Screenshots keep the original unfiltered colors. Blumio changes what you see on the display rather than altering the image data captured by macOS.
Does Blumio affect screen recording or video calls?
No. Screen recordings keep original colors for the same reason screenshots do. This is useful for demos, tutorials, presentations, support videos, and creative reviews.
Read the detailed screenshot and screen recording explanation.
Does Blumio work during screen sharing?
Blumio is designed so screenshots and screen recordings keep original colors. If screen sharing is important to your workflow, test one short session with your preferred app after installation so you know exactly how it behaves in your setup.
Does Blumio need Accessibility permission?
No. Blumio does not require Accessibility permission for its core filtering workflow.
Does Blumio need Screen Recording permission?
No. Blumio does not require Screen Recording permission for its core filtering workflow.
Does Blumio collect any data?
No. Blumio does not collect, track, transmit, or share personal data. Your preferences, shortcut, launch-at-login setting, and app exclusion list stay on your Mac.
Is Blumio private?
Yes. Blumio does not collect personal data, and its settings stay on your Mac.
